Yesterday my wife and I spent the day with family and friends at a cookout with all the traditional fixings like burgers and hotdogs. We were among the many Americans celebrating the Fourth of July with food and family. As far back as I can remember over these last eight decades, patriotic Americans have celebrated the birth of our country in different ways.

As we drove home from the cookout, we passed hundreds of homes and businesses who displayed the American flag. It is so nice to see people still show respect for our country. My favorite flags are the ones on long poles that extend high into the sky; I love watching the flag as it is waving with the breeze.

Earlier that morning, our city hosted a parade. Thousands of people showed up to celebrate America’s birthday. The parade included people, cars, wagons, and bicycles all decorated in red, white and blue.

Then the night ended with the traditional fireworks. For miles, people lined up on both sides of the street, sitting in lawn chairs, or on the tailgate of a truck. They carried coolers with food, drinks, and lined up for an hour and a half before the show was to start.

Since I can remember, I have stood with my hand over my heart for the song Star-Spangled Banner. I am sure many other Americans stood with pride as I did, singing America’s song.

Patriotism on the Fourth of July is celebrated different ways. However you celebrated this year, stay safe and God Bless America.
